Robert "Bob" Smith, 72, of Paducah, KY, left this world on February 2, 2022 after a brave battle with cancer. His family is grateful for how long he was able to hold on, and the memories that they were able to share.
Gene and Rachel Smith of Tiline, KY, welcomed Bob into the world on December 22, 1949. One of seven siblings, Bob helped out on his family’s small farm and worked any odd jobs he could find starting at an early age. His work ethic and desire to serve others led to him enlisting in the Marine Corps at age 18. After graduating high school, he served in the Vietnam War from 1969-1971. Upon returning, he married the love of his life, Karen, in 1981.
Bob loved drawing, being outdoors, spending time with his close family and beloved schnauzers, yelling at the TV, and never holding back an opinion. He had a raucous personality and always made people around him laugh. What started as an inside joke became his signature fashion style – he had a “Bob” shirt for every occasion. Favorites included “Bob is Bob Spelled Backwards” and “Bob: The Man, the Myth, the Legend.”
His battle with serious medical issues throughout his lifetime showed his courage in facing life’s challenges with good humor. Despite the pain, Bob came out a hero and stayed strong until the end. On his final days, he was surrounded by his family.
Bob is survived by his wife, Karen, and their two children, Robert and his partner Zandra Raines, Robyn Pizzo and her husband David (granddaughter Hazel); and his first wife, Linda, and their daughter Brianna (granddaughters Destiney and Aubrey, and great-grandchildren Avalee and Emric). He is also survived by his 6 siblings, Ray, John, David, Rebekah, Tony, and Michelle; and father-in-law Bobby Cole.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Rachel McKinney Smith; mother-in-law Pat Cole; and great-grandson Joe.
A private family Celebration of Life will be held in lieu of a service.
Memorial contributions to the Concord Lion’s Club (Paducah, KY) or Mercy Health Hospice would be appreciated.
